Petra Jordan tombs. Recent discovery
A fascinating find at a historic site in Jordan echoes the adventurous themes seen in the “Indiana Jones” films. Beneath the renowned Treasury, a stunning monument carved into pink sandstone, archaeologists have uncovered a hidden tomb containing the remains of at least a dozen Nabataeans.
The significance of the tombs
Petra has captivated visitors for centuries with its remarkable architecture and deep historical roots. Once the center of the Nabataean Kingdom, this ancient city features the Treasury, which has gained fame as a tourist attraction and was also a filming location for the 1989 classic “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” This recent discovery provides valuable insights into the burial customs of the Nabataeans and the true purpose of the Treasury.
Unveiling secrets beneath the Treasury
In an effort to uncover the history behind the Treasury, archaeologists, along with Josh Gates, the host of “Expeditions Unknown” on the Discovery Channel, conducted an excavation. Gates expressed his amazement at the revelation, describing the tomb as potentially the most significant ever found at Petra, especially since most tombs in the area have been discovered empty.
Glimpses into Nabataean life
This excavation offers a closer look at when and why the Treasury was constructed. Archaeologist Pearce Paul Creasman noted that the findings indicate the site served as a mausoleum rather than merely a storage location, challenging previous assumptions.
Artifacts that bridge history and cinema
Among the remarkable discoveries was a ceramic vessel that bears a striking resemblance to a prop from “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” A skeleton was found clutching what looks like a chalice, reminiscent of the Holy Grail, known in the film for its legendary ability to grant immortality.
This real-life artifact appears to be part of a broken jug dating back to the first century BC. Gates recalled the moment of discovery, stating, “It looked nearly identical to the Holy Grail featured in ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,’ set in the ancient structure directly above the tomb.”
How to watch ‘Expeditions Unknown’
The exploration of the Treasury was featured in a two-part episode of “Expeditions Unknown,” which aired on October 9. Viewers can still watch the episode on Discovery+ or through their television providers.
